4/26 Project Update

what we did:

As a group, we started finishing up all of the loose ends of our project and began to write the final report. We were able to document all of the tests via video, which we have linked below.

ben:

Helped Ibrahim record the videos of the testing and made sure that all safety procedures were followed (actually threw the rock at the helmet).

Brandon:

Began to write the final report using the information that was collected within our discord chat from the other members of the group.

Connor:

Coordinated the collection of information from the other members so that Brandon could write the final report.

Ibrahim:

Recorded the tests with Ben to illustrate a variety of different parts of the helmet. We decided to test indoor lighting, outdoor lighting, the reflectivity strip on the back, and the ability to protect the user from light debris (rocks). We decided not to test the comfort, adjustability of the strap, and that all of the lights turn on. We believe that these three would be better illustrated in class instead, so we will show off these features when we do our presentation on 5/1.

4/24/2023 Project Update

what we did:

As a group, we worked to make our prototype into a nearly finalized deliverable. We were able to install a GPS tracker that can communicate with an app on your phone, allowing you to be tracked in case you get lost or someone needs to find you. We also worked to finalize our tests so that Ibrahim could perform them once we gave the go ahead, which we did in class today.

ben:

Installed the GPS system and discussed potentially changing the left flashlight to be a holder for a multi-tool. Since the swipe-activated light comes with its own side light, there’s not really a reason to have this other one. Also, our potential customers may prefer having something that can hold some sort of utility device.

brandon:

Wrote the assignment on Blackboard as well as planning out how they are going to write up the final report. Generally helped to facilitate good communication across the team and ensured everyone was getting their work done.

connor:

Continued to update the website with new and relevant information. Most of the stuff that was done this week was communication and setup, so not a whole lot of pictures or anything to report. Next report is going to be much larger, as we’re going to have the testing videos ready.

ibrahim:

Finalized a list of tests to perform and collected the helmet to then perform said tests.

4/19 Project Update

What we did today:

As a group, we all worked on setting everything up so that once all of the functionality is built in we can begin testing. This includes the actual construction and implementation of the features on the helmet as well as the digital side of logging and posting updates.

ben:

Working on installing the GPS system inside of the helmet so that we can have that ready for Ibrahim to test the functionality.

brandon:

Coordinated the team as well as wrote the Blackboard post for both last class and this class.

connor:

Continued development and updating of the website to keep constant and accurate updates coming.

ibrahim:

Helped ben try to work out how to get the GPS system to work within the helmet so we can then move into the testing stage.

4/17 Status Update

 1. As a team, we were able to further iterate and improve our helmet design via the installation of more functions (motion-activated front light, reflective tape, and a new flashlight for improved vision). We recorded this information within the discord and then transferred all relevant information onto the website to keep a record of development.

2. We are planning on adding a GPS tracker inside of the helmet to allow for the user to be located if they get lost. We were thinking about wiring all of the different lights together so that they could all be turned on with the swipe of a hand, but this posed a security risk as there seemed to be no way to stop current from flowing within the wires (did not want to put members nor the project at risk, so planning on other ideas instead).

3. See below

Ben: Put reflective material on the back of the helmet to ensure others know the current location of the wearer. Installed a front beam light with a motion sensor so that the user can easily turn the lights on.

Brandon: Ensured everyone knew what was going on as well as recorded everything. Made sure we coordinated our efforts over the group discord to make sure updates were going through and work was actually being done.

Connor: Helped to coordinate with members over the discord as well as updated the calendar with new and relevant information as to the project progress. Ensured that all actions taken were digitally recorded so that they could easily be transferred onto the website.

Ibrahim: Tested the motion sensor of the front light as well as tested the reflectability of the material on the back. Helped to work with Ben to come up with potential ideas for testing once our final design was ready (comfort, adjustability of the strap, all lights turn on correctly, durability without a user, ability to protect the user from light debris, indoor visibility, outdoor nocturnal visibility, etc).

Below are images of our updates to provide proof that development is still underway!

4/12 Status Update

What we did

As a group, we all talked about extra features we could add to make our device have multiple functions. We discussed potentially adding a small GPS tracker and the ability to connect all of the lights to a single swipe-based switch.

ben:

Researched a variety of different methods to implement our proposed changes. Compiled a list of objects we had to buy, as we told Nathalia that some of her ideas for us were unrealistic and too costly for such a project.

Brandon:

Coordinated the team as well as wrote up the report on Blackboard for the group (should have been a group submission, so if it wasn’t then please refer to what Brandon wrote).

connor:

Continued development of the website as well as created this post to ensure a log of activity is kept accurate and clear for all users of the site.

ibrahim:

Helped to research options with Ben to implement our potential changes. Also brought another flashlight for Ben to implement to make our device more accessible and potentially better.

4/10 Deliverables

What we did today

Ben:

Got all of the supplies at his house (everything we ordered got delivered). Made a prototype over the weekend and provided us with pictures (see below). Not everything was in when the first prototype was made, so we will add the strap light and reflective tape onto the second iteration we make!

Brandon:

Wrote up and turned in the “in-class” assignment for today, as he’s the project manager.

Connor:

Wrote up this post and updated the website further. Encouraged everyone to fill in their section on the “about me” page (everyone filled it in).

Ibrahim:

Tested the strap on the prototype. Commented that the connection should be more durable, as the straps were prone to breaking. Supplied another potential light source with more options (different light mods).
